The Turkish digital platform GAİN decided to remove the series "El Turco," starring Can Yaman, following the actor’s recent controversial statements. In an interview abroad, when asked, "Turkey or Italy?" Yaman directly answered "Italy," sparking outrage on social media. Some users accused him of being insincere and ungrateful. GAİN stated that their decision was made “out of respect for the sensitivities and concerns of the Turkish people.”
The Decision Sparks Backlash
In its official statement, GAİN said:
"Recently, some of the statements made by Can Yaman, one of the actors in our series 'El Turco,' during an interview abroad have led to various public reactions and sensitivities. At GAİN, we approach all opinions and criticisms with sincerity and always prioritize the sensitivities of our people."
"Considering All Sensitivities..."
"'El Turco' was created to highlight the Ottoman Empire’s influence, courage, and cultural richness in Europe, inspired by a significant period in our history. However, we regret to observe that public perception has shifted in a way that now conflicts with the core approach of the series and the values of our platform.
Therefore, considering all these sensitivities, we have decided to remove 'El Turco' from our platform. This decision reflects our commitment to responsible broadcasting and our effort to maintain the trust we have built with the public."
A Slap-Like Response
While many expected a formal statement from Can Yaman after all this, the actor instead made a bold move on social media — and showed he wasn't particularly concerned about the situation. Yaman shared a clip from "El Turco" on his account, and shortly afterward, posted a trailer captioned: "We managed to win hearts in just 6 episodes!"
Breaking Records with 15 Million Viewers
Meanwhile, Can Yaman, who continues his career in Italy and has made a name for himself worldwide with ambitious projects, starred in "El Turco," produced by Ay Yapım.
The international series smashed viewership records in the countries where it aired. Even before its release, it made waves by entering IMDb’s "Most Anticipated Shows of 2025" list.
From its very first episode, "El Turco" attracted millions of viewers in countries like Brazil, Russia, Romania, and Honduras.
In Brazil, the series’ premiere on a national channel scored a 26% share in ratings, reaching over 15 million viewers. It also quickly climbed to the top of the country’s most popular digital platform rankings.

Can Yaman é sucesso nos países onde são exibidas suas obras ! Somente a Turquia o rejeita ! A máfia que domina a indústria do entretenimento é responsável pelo seu linchamento. Ele é uma pedra no caminho dos poderosos. A imprensa contribui para isso , se curvando ao poder pré-estabelecido.
