According to sources from The Athletic, Dillon Brooks, a pending unrestricted free agent, has been informed by the Memphis Grizzlies that he will not be brought back. The decision was made in exit meetings with team officials after a tumultuous end to the season. Both parties agreed that it would be best for them to have a fresh start.
Brooks' first-round series against the Los Angeles Lakers was considered to be a breaking point, as he called LeBron James "old" and "tired," punched him in the groin area, missed a defensive assignment, and gave up a critical basket to him in overtime. Additionally, Brooks did not speak to the media after three of the losses, resulting in a $25,000 fine from the NBA.
The Lakers left Brooks open during the series and dared him to shoot, which he struggled with, shooting only 31.2 percent from the field and 23.8 percent from 3-point land.
Brooks, who has spent his entire six-year NBA career with the Grizzlies, has often been considered a fiery, gritty defender who is not afraid to speak his mind. However, he has also earned a suspension for striking Gary Payton II in the head during last year's playoffs, and for hitting Donovan Mitchell in the groin this season, starting a fight against Cleveland.
Despite making contract extension offers to Brooks earlier in the season, which were rejected, Memphis has decided to move on. The Grizzlies have expressed that they will be "very aggressive" in the offseason, with up to five first-round picks and up to three draft swaps to utilize in prospective trades, according to Grizzlies executive vice president of basketball operations Zach Kleiman.
