Buse Buçe Kahraman, who played the character Pelin in the TV series Yalı Çapkını, was a guest on Ceyda Düvenci's show. During her time on the series, she faced cancel culture (online harassment) on social media because of her role as Pelin. Speaking about the issue, the talented actress made striking statements: "Cancel culture (online harassment) has reached such a point that we can pick up our phones and attack anyone's life we want. We can make people we don't know and whose experiences we're unaware of go through terrible things on social media," she said.
In Yalı Çapkını, Buse Buçe Kahraman's character Pelin came between Ferit, played by Mert Ramazan Demir, and Seyran, portrayed by Afra Saraçoğlu, leading to her being targeted online. She discussed the matter on Ceyda Düvenci's program.
Ceyda Düvenci began the conversation by saying, "They upset you a bit on Yalı Çapkını," and asked the actress about her experiences. Discussing the challenges of portraying Pelin, Kahraman said:
"I can't say that this saddened me or affected me deeply. It's just that one of the most important things in life for me is respect. I want to respect everyone, whether I like them or not, and I expect that same respect from everyone, especially from people I don't know and whose world I'm not familiar with.
"At Some Point, You Want to Say 'Stop'"
"Because this was the first time I encountered something like this related to my work, I was naturally a bit taken aback at first. I think we need to be able to distinguish between the actor and the character. Especially now, cancel culture (online harassment) has reached such a point that we can pick up our phones and attack any life we want. We can make people we don't know and whose experiences we're unaware of go through terrible things on social media. They can do this even to very young people, regardless of gender or age group. That's why I think we need to stop this. Cancel culture (online harassment) shouldn't become a norm. Especially in our society, TV series and the entertainment sector have a big place. We're loved, which I think is a wonderful thing, but when it reaches the level of insults, you want to say 'stop' there.
"I Needed to Take Action About This"
"At some point, I needed to take action about this. I wanted it to set a precedent because this isn't something directed at the character but at the person, which isn't right—you can't do this, you shouldn't do this. Sometimes this spills over to our families, and that's something I can't tolerate at all. They don't have to go through this; this is my profession, my job."
