After this move, Yaman took a rather defiant stance. He posted a clip on social media featuring a quote from Pope Francis, suggesting he might not be taking the backlash too seriously.
Can Yaman, who was last seen in a Turkish drama years ago (Bay Yanlış), has since relocated abroad. Now based in Italy, both his personal and professional life have taken root there. Every time he returns to Turkey, he finds himself at the center of new controversies. Despite the criticism he often faces, he has starred in popular Italian shows like Che Dio ci Aiuti and Viola Come il Mare, further boosting his fame overseas. His recent project, El Turco, had already been drawing a lot of attention.
While promoting El Turco across different countries, Yaman was asked during one of the events: “Turkey or Italy?” Without a moment’s pause, he replied, “Italy.” This answer sparked a major backlash from certain groups.
Back in Turkey, the show had been available on GAİN since April 2. But following the uproar, the platform decided to pull the series from its catalog—a clear response to the actor's remark.
Naturally, fans and critics alike were curious to see how Can Yaman would react to the removal and the criticism:

And it seems he truly didn’t. Yaman’s recent Instagram post left little doubt about how much—or how little—he was affected by the whole situation.
On April 26, he shared a video featuring words from Pope Francis, who passed away earlier this month on April 11, 2025. In the clip, the late Pope says:
“If you want to do what’s right, don’t be afraid to go against the current. Be brave.”
Many interpreted Yaman’s post as a subtle jab at the controversy in Turkey and the backlash he faced after his interview.
