While the lights were going out in Turkey on the raid that had seen him stopped in Istanbul, Can Yaman was appearing on Canale 5 screens in the season premiere of C’è Posta per Te. It was a coincidence that not even a master thriller director could have imagined. In any case, the actor aired on Maria De Filippi’s show at the exact hours following his release by Turkish authorities, after undergoing toxicology tests as part of an anti-drug operation. The program, of course, had been recorded weeks earlier.
The Entrance with Red Roses for Grandma Pina
Five young men invited Can Yaman to the show to surprise their grandmother. The story they shared was marked by devastating loss: their mother passed away just before turning forty. From that moment on, Grandma Pina took responsibility for raising them, while their father fell into a deep depression that left him unable to care for his children.
Pina raised them, supporting them through every stage of life. Then, two years ago, another tragedy struck: she lost a second daughter. This time, the pain brought her to her knees, making everything even harder.
When the envelope opens, Grandma Pina finds her grandsons standing in front of her. “You are the most important person in our lives. You raised us as if you were our mother,” they tell her. “Life with you wasn’t easy, but you never gave up, and you taught us to be strong—just like you are.”
Maria De Filippi reads the letter written by the boys, and Pina is moved. Then it’s time for the surprise: Can Yaman enters the studio holding a bouquet of red roses, singing “Rose Rosse” by Massimo Ranieri.
The Actor’s Personal Story: His Grandmother Died Three Weeks Earlier
Can Yaman sits next to Grandma Pina and begins to speak. “I also grew up with my grandmothers,” he says. “And I lost my paternal grandmother three weeks ago. She was an angel—a lioness like you. I think she gave up because she didn’t have anyone left to live for.”
Mentioning his maternal grandmother opens a window into his family: “My maternal grandmother is a singer, a freer spirit.” He then expands on the bond he has built in Italy with older women: “In Italy I’ve met so many grandmothers—I’ve had others too. Yesterday I met an 84-year-old woman at the promotion for the series I filmed. She was angry because they were pronouncing my name wrong.”
Before leaving, Yaman gives Grandma Pina a ring he describes as a lucky charm—“the symbol of your warrior spirit.” A gesture that closes the surprise and takes on a special meaning in light of what happened in the hours after it aired. While millions of viewers watched Yaman give red roses and affectionate words to an Italian grandmother, the actor had only recently left Istanbul’s Forensic Medicine Institute. The episode had been recorded weeks earlier, and there was no way it could have predicted that the broadcast would fall on one of the most delicate moments of his career.
