El Hormiguero ended the week the same way it began: with a visit from an international actor. Last month it was Can Yaman’s turn, as he sat down with Pablo Motos to talk about his new series, El Turco.
The show, which premieres on Movistar Plus+ on January 16, is an adventure-and-romance series set during a time of major geopolitical change — the end of the Ottoman Empire in the 17th century.
As soon as he took his seat at the table, the Turkish actor surprised both the host and viewers with how well he speaks Spanish.
“When I was filming Sandokan in Italy, I decided I wanted to come to Spain and learn Spanish. I spent a full year learning Spanish with a private teacher who came to my house four hours a day. Now I’m filming in Spanish, in Tenerife, and it’s the dream of my life,” Yaman explained.
Motos then asked him to share more about the new project.

“The production company filming it is my favorite in Turkey, but I used to do only romantic comedies and they didn’t produce that kind of series. When I moved to Italy and changed my style, they reached out to me,” he added.
The host then asked: “What would you say is more difficult — filming a romantic scene or an action scene?” Yaman replied: “I’d say action scenes are harder for me because I’ve done so many romantic series, so many episodes, and I have a lot of experience.”
To wrap up, Motos joked about Yaman’s popularity with women thanks to those romantic comedies, and said: “You’ve mentioned that when you were little you were really ugly…”
“Well, I was right when I was born. I was covered in hair — my dad said I didn’t look like his son. After a month I started looking a bit better,” Yaman said, laughing.
